Star Wars Saga Set for First Ever Digital HD Release Later This Week
Just in time for this year’s Star Wars Celebration 2015 convention and the release of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens in December, fans can get a refresher on the entire Star Wars cinematic saga. Walt Disney Studios, Lucafilm and 20th Century Fox have officially announced the launch of the Star Wars Digital Movie Collection. For the first time, all six Star Wars films will be available on Digital HD globally. The digital HD collection launches on Friday, April 10.
Speaking on the announcement, Walt Disney Studios President Alan Bergman commented: “Since the debut of the first film nearly 40 years ago, Star Wars has become a worldwide phenomenon with legions of fans from every generation. It’s only fitting that audiences enjoy this legendary Saga and its many fascinating behind-the-scenes stories on a wide variety of platforms, and we’re very excited to finally bring all six films to Digital HD for the first time.”
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy added: “We’re thrilled that fans will be able to enjoy the Star Wars Saga on their digital devices wherever they go. These films broke new ground in technology, design, sound, and visual effects, and we’ve created some very special bonus material which delves into the Saga’s rich history, including new and never-before-released conversations between legendary Star Wars artists – the masters who helped George bring his iconic universe to life.”
Star Wars: Episodes I-VI will be available for purchase as a complete digital movie collection and individually. However, viewers will have access to more than just the films. Included with the purchase of the films will be never-before-seen special features, including Star Wars: Discoveries from Inside and Conversations with key contributes across the franchise. Curated extras from each Star Wars film will also be available, including deleted scenes from the original Star Wars Trilogy.
The announcement does not specify if the digital HD versions of the original Star Wars Trilogy will be the Special Edition cuts or the theatrical versions, but one can assume only the Special Editions being available would be the case. You can check out a video trailer for the release in the player below. The HD collection will be available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, Xbox Live, Disney Movies Anywhere and Verizon Fios.
