Stephen Moffat To Leave Doctor Who After Season 10!
Time in the realm of Doctor Who is a tricky thing. For some people it’s never enough, and for others it seems too long. For long time showrunner Stephen Moffat, his time is officially running out. BBC and Moffat made a statement today, via Radiotimes, revealing that the next season/series of Doctor Who will indeed be his last. Stephen Moffat took over after Russell T. Davies ended his run with the 10th Doctor David Tennant, allowing a clean slate for the 11th Doctor Matt Smith and Moffat. Between Matt Smith and the 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi, Moffat has run Doctor Who for six seasons/series, including the now traditional Christmas specials.
What may depress Doctor Who fans a bit is that the show’s 10th season won’t arrive until 2017, so the only new episode this year will be the Christmas Special. “I have decided to schedule Steven’s big finale series in Spring 2017 to bring the nation together for what will be a huge event on the channel,” said BBC1 controller Charlotte Moore. “2016 is spoilt with national moments including the Euros and Olympics and I want to hold something big back for 2017 – I promise it will be worth the wait!”
“Feels odd to be talking about leaving when I’m just starting work on the scripts for season 10, but the fact is my timey-wimey is running out,” said Moffat. “While Chris is doing his last run of Broadchurch, I’ll be finishing up on the best job in the universe and keeping the TARDIS warm for him. It took a lot of gin and tonic to talk him into this, but I am beyond delighted that one of the true stars of British Television drama will be taking the Time Lord even further into the future. At the start of season 11, Chris Chibnall will become the new showrunner of Doctor Who. And I will be thrown in a skip.”
Doctor Who is currently on hiatus, and it will return with a new special featuring Peter Capaldi this Christmas.
