WB’s Batgirl Movie Is Back On With A New Writer
One of the more curious bits of movie superhero news in recent memory is Joss Whedon’s voluntary departure from Warner Bros’ Batgirl movie project, most notably because of Whedon’s admitted reason: “It took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story.” Hey, some people don’t figure that out until the movie is already playing.
Joss did have an outline of a story though. According to previous reports, Joss wanted to adapt “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!”, the 1967 comic debut of the character, for the big screen. In Batgirl’s very first story, she worked as a librarian part-time and in her spare time, suited up to fight the supervillain Killer Moth. But that will probably never happen now.
The Batgirl movie itself, though, is still a possibility! WB confirmed today they’re still pursuing the project and have hired on a new writer — Christina Hodson. Hodson doesn’t have much in the way of established history, but she’s got an impressive resume with three of her scripts mentioned in The Black List (Hollywood’s annual survey of the best scripts for movies that never made it). She also, arguably, has some experience with Batgirl: she wrote a pass for a proposed Birds of Prey movie that would’ve had Batgirl in it.
A Hodson script is coming to theaters sooner than this….but it may not be the type of film you’ve been waiting for. She wrote the script to Bumblebee, the Transformers spinoff movie currently in post-production.
